Progress in the Development of Kericho Kerenga Airport

Efforts to establish the Kericho Kerenga Airport have gained significant momentum following a multi-stakeholder meeting chaired by Kericho Governor Dr. Erick Mutai earlier this week. The meeting, held at the Governor’s office, brought together representatives from the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), National Lands Commission (NLC), Browns PLC, and other key stakeholders to address land acquisition challenges critical to the airport’s development.
During the discussions, stakeholders unanimously agreed that the 23 hectares initially allocated for the airport are insufficient to meet international standards. To resolve this, Browns PLC was formally requested to approve an additional 47 hectares, increasing the total land area to 70 hectares. This expansion will enable KAA to proceed with tendering for construction in the coming months, as funds have already been allocated in the current financial year.
The Kerenga Airport project aligns with Kenya’s broader vision to enhance connectivity and economic growth in agricultural regions. Once operational, the airport will feature a 1.2-kilometer runway, with plans to extend it to 2 kilometers in later phases, and modern facilities designed to support trade, tourism, and the export of high-value crops like tea—a cornerstone of Kericho’s economy.
The collaborative efforts of local and national authorities have been instrumental in advancing this project. Among those present at the meeting were Kenneth Odire (Director of Browns PLC), Meshack Ochieng (KAA General Manager of Projects), and Joseph Korir (CECM Lands), who reaffirmed their commitment to resolving land acquisition hurdles and ensuring timely implementation.
Kerenga Airport is set to transform Kericho County by unlocking its economic potential through improved connectivity and market access. It will facilitate faster movement of goods, promote tourism, and provide access to emergency medical services—all while contributing to Kenya’s National Aviation Policy aimed at opening up air transport and attracting investment.
